ToFD

Training ToFD

General Information:

The ultrasonic Time of Flight Diffraction Technique (ToFD) is an advanced NDO method in which ultrasonic sound waves are introduced into a material. These waves will induce diffraction signals when hitting any defects and/or the geometry of the object. By recording these diffraction signals, (weld) defects can be detected.

More information

General

Before starting the inspection, the surface must be cleaned: coating, welding spatter, grease and dirt should be removed.

Ultrasonic sound waves are introduced into the object by means of a sound exciter (probe). When hitting a defect and/or the geometry, these sound waves generate diffraction signals. These diffraction signals are detected by a separate receiver. In the probe, the received sound is then converted into an electrical signal which is displayed on a screen. The position and dimension of the indication on the screen will be interpreted by the tester. The assessment will be made on the basis of a prescribed standard and/or specification.

Characteristic of the ToFD test is the use of special broadband probes in combination with software with advanced configuration and analysis capabilities. The most common application of ToFD testing is the inspection of welding joints where the transmitter is placed on one side of the weld and the receiver on the other side.

For each geometry, the best choice of settings should be made to perform an optimal examination. For a good assessment of the indications found, detailed knowledge of the object (geometry), the manufacturing process and/or the conditions of use is essential.

Scope/Products/Sectors

ToFD testing of objects for surface and internal defects, (fatigue) cracks, determination of defect heights, (wall) thickness determination and/or welding defects. ToFD is very accurate in determining the height of defects, because the difference between top and bottom of defects is made visible.

This testing has many application areas, but it is specifically applied to constructions of fine-grained carbon steels for the testing of:

  • Welds
  • (Wall-) thickness determination;
  • Cracks occurring during operation;

Level 2

Training Information Level 2

For whom

The training is set up and intended for (oncoming) NDT inspectors/operators for whom a qualification and/or certification is required. In addition, the training gives detailed insight into the examination, this is supporting information for each work planner, QC/QA & quality manager.

The following components are recommended for course participants:

  • A MBO-4 prior education or similar.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics.
  • Interested in engineering.
  • Technical English, to be able to read standards, specifications & procedures.

In order to qualify for certification, it is necessary to have a valid ISO9712 UT2 or UT3 certificate.

Structure

The training includes both a theoretical and a practical part. The training time will be divided 40/60 between the theoretical and practical part. During the course, the student will lay a foundation for his future work under the supervision of experienced NDO specialists.

The objectives

  • Familiarize the student with the principles and technical background of the testing.
  • Be able to carry out ToFD and interpret test results.
  • Determining the setup for conducting the test.
  • Be able to draft a thorough work instruction in order to direct a level 1 tester.
  • Reading and interpreting procedures and/or specifications (mainly in English).
  • Assess whether the identified indications meet the acceptance criteria.
  • Drafting of test reports.

Practical information

Training Duration ISO 9712:
Full Training (ToFD 2): 10 days including exam, certification process via Hobéon SKNDO.

Training Duration SNT-TC-1A or EN 4179:
10 days including exam, exam report only. Final certification will have to be done by the company through its own Written Practice.

Exams:
The training meets, and can be completed with an exam(-s) in accordance with, the requirements of the ISO 9712 or according to the requirements of the Written Practice of the own company (SNT-TC-1A and/or EN4179). The exam consists of a theoretical (general and specific) and a practical part. Both the training and the exam(-s) are tailored to the relevant industrial sectors (for example: Examination before and during use (incl. manufacturing), Aviation or Railway maintenance.)

Training Information Level 3

For whom

The training is set up and intended for the (oncomming) NDT specialist for whom a qualification and/or certification is required. The course also provides an insight into the working methods of the test.

The following components are recommended for course participants:

  • A MBO-4/HBO prior education or similar.
  • Knowledge of mathematics and physics.
  • Interested in engineering.
  • Technical English, to be able to interpret standards.
  • It is an advantage to have already completed the BASIC module with a positive result or be in possession of a level/Level 3 certificate in another method.

In order to qualify for certification, it is necessary to have a valid ISO9712 UT3 certificate.

Structure

The training includes both a theoretical and a practical part (writing a technical procedure). The training time will be divided 80/20 between the theoretical and practical part. During the training, the student will lay a foundation for future work under the supervision of experienced NDT specialists.

The objectives

  • Familiarize the student with in-depth physical knowledge of ToFD testing.
  • Distinction between and possibilities of the various test techniques/setups (for example: Non-parallel scanning of surfaces (uneven thicknesses), B/D scan, hollow/convex scan of surfaces, etc.).
  • Specific application possibilities of ToFD.
  • Special/new applications within the field of ToFD testing.
  • Reading and interpreting certification related standards and/or procedures (mainly in English).
