Penetrant

Training Penetrant

General Information:

Penetrant testing (PT/LPI/DPI or FPI) is an NDO method in which a penetrating liquid is applied to the surface. Surface defects will become visible after expiration of the penetration time and the application of a contrast powder.

General

Before starting the examination, the surface must be cleaned thoroughly: paint, grease and dirt must be removed, after which the penetrant liquid can be applied.

This fluid slowly penetrates into surface defects by means of the capillary action. After removing the excess penetrant fluid from the surface and applying a contrast powder (developer), the indication of the defect will become visible. The surface defect is assessed according to the required standard, resulting in acceptable or unacceptable.

Most penetrant testing is done during daylight conditions. If smaller defects need to be made visible (higher sensitivity), the testing can be done under UV light. For each application, the best choice in the penetrant process should be made in order to be able to perform an optimal test.

Scope/Products/Sectors

Surface testing of Non-ferrous materials for surface defects, pitting corrosion and/or (fatigue) cracks. It can also be used for leak testing.

The research can be applied to all non-porous materials, but in particular to the following products:

  • Aluminium casting parts of more complex geometry;
  • Pump housings made of Magnesium, Aluminium and/or Bronze;
  • Pipes, fittings and/or welds of, for example, Austenitic steels, Aluminium and Titanium in the petrochemical and/or food industry;
  • Highly strained aircraft components, such as impellors and/or turbine blades made of Titanium;

  • Interested in engineering.
  • Technical English, to be able to read work instructions.

Structure

The training includes both a theoretical and a practical part. The training time will be divided 40/60 between the theoretical and practical part. During the training, under the supervision of experienced NDT specialists, the student will lay a foundation for future work.

The objectives

  • Familiarize the student with the basic principles and the pros and cons of penetrant testing.
  • Be able, under supervision, to perform penetrant testing using various techniques and report the findings.
  • Reading and interpreting work instructions and/or detailed procedures (mainly in English).
  • Drafting of test reports (search parameters and findings).
