Phased Array

Training Phased Array

General Information:

Ultrasonic Phased Array (PA) testing is an advanced NDO method in which ultrasonic sound waves are introduced into a material. These waves will be reflected by any defects and/or the geometry of the object. By recording the reflected waves, (weld) defects can be detected.

More information

General

Before starting the inspection, the surface must be cleaned: coating, welding spatter, grease and dirt should be removed.

Ultrasonic sound waves are introduced into the object by means of a sound exciter (probe). These sound waves will be reflected at the location of a defect or geometry. The reflected sound waves are detected by the probe. In the probe, the received sound is then converted into an electrical signal which is displayed on a screen. The position, shape and height of the indication on the screen will be interpreted by the tester. The assessment will be made on the basis of a prescribed standard and/or specification.

Characteristic of Phased Array testing is the use of special probes that consist of multiple elements in combination with software with advanced configuration and display capabilities. With Phased Array, it is possible to change the direction of the ultrasonic sound beam with the electronics present in the equipment. This makes it possible in Phased Array testing to investigate simultaneously with multiple angles.

The most common test will be performed by transmitting the sound and absorbing the reflection with the same probe (pulse echo). It is also possible to radiate an object where transmitter and receiver are separated. For each application, the best choice of settings should be made in order to perform an optimal test. For a good assessment of the indications found, detailed knowledge of the object (geometry), the manufacturing process and/or the conditions of use is essential.

Scope/Products/Sectors

Ultrasonic Phased Array testing of objects made from various materials for surface and internal defects, (de-)lamination, (fatigue) cracks, determination of (wall) thickness and/or welding defects.

The examination has many application possibilities, but is specifically applied to the following products:

  • Cast and forged parts of Aluminium, Steel and Brass;
  • Weld joints of materials with a homogeneous fine structure;
  • Sheet material of aircraft hull and industrial semi-finished products;
  • (Wall) thickness determination in petrochemistry, shipbuilding, aircraft construction and/or food industry;
  • Delamination and deformations in composite parts occurring in aircraft construction, petrochemicals, shipbuilding, windmills, water/gas conducts and automotive industry;

Training Information Level 2

For whom

The training is set up and intended for (oncomming) NDT inspectors/operators for whom a qualification and/or certification is required. In addition, the training gives detailed insight into the examiniation, this is supporting information for each work planner, QC/QA & quality manager.

The following components are recommended for course participants:

  • A MBO-4 prior education or similar.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematics.
  • Interested in engineering.
  • Technical English, to be able to read standards, specifications & procedures.

In order to qualify for certification, it is necessary to have a valid ISO9712 UT2 or UT3 certificate.

Structure

The training includes both a theoretical and a practical part. The training time will be divided 40/60 between the theoretical and practical part. During the course, the student will lay a foundation for his future work under the supervision of experienced NDO specialists.

The objectives

  • Familiarize the students with the principles and technical background of Phased Array testing.
  • Being able to perform Phased Array testing using different techniques and interpreting test results.
  • Determine the best test technique for conducting the test.
  • Be able to draft a thorough work instruction in order to direct a level 1 operator.
  • Reading and interpreting procedures and/or specifications (mainly in English).
  • Assess whether the identified indications meet the acceptance criteria.
  • Drafting of test reports.
